Teaching Mathematics To Maximise Understanding and Foster Agency in Students

Join us in for our in-person workshop, online workshop, or both!

In-person workshop: Wednesday 1st June 2022 (8:30am-3:30pm)
Where: B:Hive, 72 Taharoto Road, Takapuna Auckland

Online workshop: Monday 23rd May - Friday 24th June

Teaching mathematics is a tough gig, and teaching it well is a fine art. Despite our exceptional efforts as teachers, many students are left with a dazed ‘I just don’t get it’ feeling when it comes to mathematics. Even students with reasonable grades can flounder when asked to explain their mathematical understanding.

To add salt to the wound, many students take little responsibility for their learning. These two factors - poor understanding and low agency - are closely linked.

We welcome you to join Education Perfect and Richard Andrew in our workshops, providing you with additional tools to that will profoundly foster understanding and agency in your students.

Which PD should I enrol in, or should I enrol in both?
The online course and in-person workshop are complementary PDs. Although both are based on the Understanding-first, procedures-second framework, each has a different focus.

The online PD has a strong focus on implementing strategies with students.

The in-person PD has a strong focus on collaborating with workshop colleagues to develop resources based on the framework.

Therefore, either will be beneficial, but both will be better.

Note that the combined PDs (11 hours) is a subset of a 40-hour online PD we run with top International Schools in China. So we don’t consider 11 hours to be excessive.

FAQs

Richard Andrew

Richard spent 20 years as a teacher, including six as Department Head. For the last twelve, Richard has presented teachers with a road map for change requiring the tweaking of current practices rather than the 'throwing out of the baby with the bathwater'.

Richard is an extremely relatable presenter claiming to have made ‘more mistakes than anyone in the history of teaching’. It is his transparency and his ability to present large pedagogical ideas in a feet-on-the-ground, easy to follow, (no edu-babble) manner that makes his work transformative.
