Brain Bee Challenge 2025

What is the Brain Bee Challenge?

The Australian and New Zealand Brain Bee Challenge (ABBC & NZBBC) is a competition for high school students in Years 10 (Australia) and 11 (New Zealand) to learn about the brain and its functions, learn about neuroscience research, find out about careers in neuroscience and to dispel misconceptions about neurological and mental illnesses.

When is it?

Students are encouraged to begin interacting with the learning material found in the Science Content Library as soon as they are registered with EP. The Round 1 Assessment must be sat between March 3 - March 31 2025 (no exceptions). Teachers must allocate an hour of time for students to sit the online assessment through EP during school hours, under exam supervision, within these dates.

Who can enter?

The competition is open to all high school students in Years 10 (Australia) and Year 11 (New Zealand).

How do I enter?

Complete the form above to enter for 2025. Please note the form is for teachers only - students must register via their teacher.

How much does it cost?

It is completely free for all Year 10 (AUS) and Year 11 (NZ) students to compete in the Brain Bee Challenge.

Are there any prizes?

There are no prizes offered by EP for the Brain Bee Challenge. EP does not release individual student results to schools.

EP will only provide certificate templates in 2025 showing Round 1 participation in Brain Bee.

Round 1: Online Quiz

Students study through Education Perfect (Brain Bee lessons can be found here). They then complete an online quiz to determine their knowledge and understanding of the structure and function of the brain during the month of March.

Round 2: Regional Finals

Students who achieve a high score in Round 1 are invited to participate in Round 2 of the Brain Bee Challenge by their state/regional Brain Bee coordinator. This involves further study of additional material through the EP platform before students sit the Round 2 online assessment (date to be confirmed in 2025). Students may then be invited to attend a full day of activities at a university campus/research institution in their capital city that includes further exploration of neuroscience topics (subject to the Regional Coordinator's discretion).

Round 3: National Finals

Students compete in four challenges, including an anatomy challenge, a written short answer challenge, a patient diagnosis challenge and a live question and answer challenge. Students also have the opportunity to attend ANS scientific sessions and meet with scientists, researchers and students involved in neuroscience.

Round 4: International Finals

Round 4 is the International Brain Bee (IBB). The IBB is held at an international neuroscience/psychology conference and, in the past, has been held in places such as America and Italy.
